Abstract

Background and aim:Low back pain (the reason for the movement restrictions) is lead to reduce the core body stability. The study aim was to determine the effect of the core stability exercises on unstable surface (Swiss ball) on pain intensity, quality of life(QOL) and muscle endurance of women with idiopathic chronic low back pain(ICLBP).
Materials and methods:30 women with ICLBP with an average age of 36.73±9.44years,height 158.00±6.03cm and body mass66.83±10.77kgwere referred to a specialist physician. Sampling was conducted in the form of targeted and available. They were divided into two groups, experimental group(n=15, participate in exercises) and control group(n=15, no exercise). Before and after two months, the pain intensity, the QOL and endurance of trunk extensor and flexor muscles were measured by the Quebec questionnaire, SF-36questionnaire, sit-up test and sorenson test, respectively. The exercise program was performed for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week(duration of 60minutes). The paired t-test and covarians analysis were used for statistical analysis(P<0.05).
Results:There were the significant reduction in the pain intensity of experimental group, post-training(27.80±18.18)compared to pre-exercise(35.00±20.78)(P<0.0001);and the significant increase in the QOL post-training(115.50±29.27)compared to pre-exercise(99.31±31.43)(P<0.002). 26% and 38% the significant increase were observed in the Sorensen and sit-up tests of the experimental group, respectively(P<0.008). There was the significant difference between the experimental and control groups in all the variables, after exercise(P<0.01).
Conclusion:Core stability exercises with Swiss ball focus on trunk muscles and increase muscle endurance. The increase muscle endurance led to reduce pain intensity and improve QOL. These exercises are recommended for these patients.
