Abstract

The shoulder joint to provide dynamic stability in a full range of motion required muscle activity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of Powerball mediated resistance training on the strength of wrist and shoulder and upper extremity performance in participants with impingement syndrome. To implement this quasi experimental study, 30 volleyball players purposefully selected and randomly divided into 2 (shoulder impingement and healthy control) groups. For measurement of grip strength, wrist and shoulder strength and performance before and after implementation of the intervention programs (eight weeks of resistance training using Powerball) the hand held dynamometer, isokinetic dynamometer and Y balance tests were used respectively. Analysis of Covariance test in SPSS program version 23 at a significance level of 5% was used for statistical analyses. Findings of current research revealed that the Powerball exercises has significant influences on strength of internal rotators concentric (P =0.009) eccentric (P =0.014), external rotators concentric (P =0.001) eccentric (P =0.021), grip strength (P =0.001), wrist extension strength (P=0.009) and upper extremity performance (P=0.001). Due to the significant effect of powerball mediated exercises on wrist and shoulder strength and performance of upper extremity, use of these exercises were recommended for subjects with impingement syndrome with impairment in mentioned variables.
