Abstract

Background and Purpose: Frequent throwing movements can change muscular strength balance shoulder athletes compared to non-athletes. The purpose of this study was to the comparison of strength ratio between agonist and antagonist muscles of the shoulder in badminton players and non-athletes.
Method: The statistical population in the athletes included badminton female players and in the non-athletes included Inactive female students in Guilan State, The statistical sample consisted of 20 badminton players with an average age of 22.30 ± 1.89, and 20 non-athletes women with an average age of 21.90 ± 2.61 years, that were selected purposefully and availability. Isometric strength was measured by Manual Muscle Test (MMT). Demographic information was collected through questionnaires. After the normal data distribution was determinded, independent and paired t-test was used for analysis data.
Results: comparison of the agonist to antagonist muscles strength in the shoulder joint showed that there was a significant difference in the ratio of internal to external rotation and flexion-extension muscles strength between dominant and non-dominant limb of badminton players (p=0/001; p=0/008), and also dominant limb of both groups (badminton players and non-athletes) (p<0/001; p=0/004).
Conclusion: Repeating pattern of movements in the badminton to in a long time may cause imbalance in shoulder joint muscle strength and in case of inadequate attention and lack of using proper stretching and strengthening exercises, this asymmetry can make athletes prone to injury and may reduce their performance.
